RSPCA fundraiser at Poets Cafe

“Buffalo are an important part of an Indonesian farmer’s ability to work the land and produce food, and sadly more than 30,000 working animals were lost in the 2004 tsunami in Aceh alone,” said Heffo.
“While buffalo are needed immediately there is also a long term need for quality breeding animals in Aceh.
So, what we plan to do here is fix two environmental disasters in one.
“In the Northern Territory feral buffalo contribute to environmental damage in sensitive wetland areas. Buffalo also compete with native animals and livestock for feed and water. While there is a small market in buffalo for local consumption and live export, the overall numbers of buffalo are increasing here, to the point where culling looks inevitable.
“Our project is quite simple really - firstly, we take buffalo out of environmentally sensitive areas in the Territory. We train them, get them quiet and send them over to Aceh.”
Incredible as this may seem, Heffo spoke of sending the first trial shipment of buffalo to Aceh in November last year which was a tremendous success!
The evening at Poets did not end with Heffo’s amazing story but continued with fabulous food and raffles. Many of the animal lovers in attendance went home with wonderful prizes for themselves, and their pets, thanks to the generous donations of sponsors. Prizes included a Poets dinner voucher valued at $100, items from Montville’s ‘Candle Shoppe’, a beautiful ‘Verde’ soft plush microfibre bath robe, a pink dog coat from ‘Poinciana Lane’ and a fabulous decorative santa from ‘A Country Lane’.
Thanks go to Poets Cafe who donated the venue, food and wine for the evenings festivities. Thanks also to the staff at Poets who donated their time to this worthy cause.
