For the first time in living memory table tennis tables took over the village green in Montville for the local Table Tennis Club's first annual Open Day event on August 12.
The event proved popular with both spectators and players from as far away as Brisbane assembling in the Village Hall for the main event of the Montville Open. All matches were hard fought and spectators were rewarded with some enthralling battles that attracted enthusiastic applause throughout the day.
From a field of 24 players including several from the Montville Club, 3 emerged as contenders for the title of Montville Open Champion. The Montville Club is proud to say that its president Matthew Roy upheld the club pride in making the final three.
Victory was however achieved by Glasshouse Mountains player Nathan Shepherdson with grand-daughter of local woody Ken Urqhart coming in second. No mean feat considering Kayla Coombs is only 12 years old. She displayed to the older players what regimented training and competition can do to hone your competition skills.
Interested players are welcome to attend the social nights every Wednesday from 7.30pm at the Montville Village Hall.
