‘Cakes for a Cause’ is a project that Georgina Thompson began in the first half of 2006, and with the festive season now behind us her venture has proven itself to be a real success and looks like also having an exciting future!
“Back in March I attended a Hillsong ladies conference in Sydney where I heard Marylyn Skinner speak,” said Georgina.
“She is the founder of Watoto Child Care Ministries in Uganda and was so inspirational! On returning to the Sunshine Coast,
I really felt drawn to do some fundraising for her organization.
After meeting with her team in Brisbane, I booked the Watoto African Choir for this coming November 2007, to perform at a gala dinner that I plan to hold as a fundraising evening - however......
“Exciting as this was, I wanted to do something in the meantime and that is when the vision for Cakes for a Cause began. I was looking for a product that would not only raise money, but would also bring awareness and become a ripple effect - where it was not just a product, eaten and then forgotten, but could become a personal fundraiser for people to raise money of their own accord, for a cause of their choice.
“The following months consisted of finding suppliers for the box and of course the bakery. Having the idea was just the beginning - it was getting it off the ground that was really fun!!
“An eye catching box and design and a good quality cake were on the top of my list. We tried at least 20 different bakeries and spoke to many companies about the unique money box / cake box design.”
The result - over 2500 people were recipients or purchasers of a Cake for a Cause this Christmas, exceeding all expectations.
“They made wonderful Christmas Gifts and people were pleased to purchase something that was not only great quality, but that all the proceeds were going to a worthy cause,” said Georgina.
The cakes, in their distinctive box, are now a regular line at the Maleny IGA and a number of other outlets.
“I would like to see various children's charities being supported by ‘Cakes for a Cause’ and that is why all the proceeds are going to reach, fund and touch the lives of children less fortunate. It is all about raising the next generation to live better lives.”
The future of Cakes for a Cause is exciting, with possibly a variety of cakes made throughout the year. The cakes are also available for school and specific charity fundraisers.
